{"id":10064,"date":"2026-01-14T12:53:43","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T17:53:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sta2.org\/church\/?p=10064"},"modified":"2026-01-14T13:04:24","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T18:04:24","slug":"second-week-in-ordinary-time-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sta2.org\/church\/from-the-pastor\/second-week-in-ordinary-time-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Second Week in Ordinary Time 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Question of the Week<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What did John the Baptist testify about Jesus and why?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cI will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.\u201d \u2014 Isaiah 49:6<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the first reading on this Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Isaiah\u2019s prophecy concerning the Suffering Servant of God reveals the servant\u2019s mission. He is to bring back and gather all the tribes of Israel (Jacob). God\u2019s grace and glory will rest on him and God himself will be the servant\u2019s strength. But God will do even more! Not only will the house of Jacob be blessed, but the entire world will be blessed! God\u2019s light, truth, and salvation will reach to the ends of the earth!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is fulfilled in Jesus! John testifies that Jesus is the anointed one of God, for he saw the Holy Spirit come down and remain on Jesus! He will baptize with the fire of the Holy Spirit! What does that mean?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, from our perspective, we know what happened at Pentecost! The Holy Spirit came down in the form of fire and rested on the apostles and Mary, who were gathered in prayer in the upper room. The Holy Spirit continues to be with us, completing and accomplishing the work Jesus started during his public ministry.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That work continues in the Church, and especially in and through the liturgy.&nbsp;We are very blessed to have beautiful liturgies here. I am grateful for everyone\u2019s participation. As you know, we have two different forms of the Latin Rite, one that is from 1962 missal of Pope St. John XIII and the second promulgated by Pope St. John Paul II that is in use today. Both are Latin Rite missals that contain the prayers and order of celebrating the Latin liturgy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Eucharistic Prayer III, there is a beautiful line that comes from the prophecy of Malachi and Psalm 113:3 that says, \u201cFrom the rising of the sun, to its setting\u201d may the name of the Lord be praised. The prophecy from Malachi says, \u201cFrom the rising of the sun to its setting, my name is great among the nations; incense offerings are made to my name everywhere, and a pure offering; for my name is great among the nations, says the LORD of hosts.\u201d This prophecy is especially fulfilled in the Church as it celebrates the New Covenant established by Jesus at the Last Supper. All over the world, the Mass is celebrated continuously.&nbsp;It is celebrated using various rites.&nbsp;The Latin Rite is just one of the ways to offer the sacrifice of Christ.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church that has six main liturgical rites that celebrate the Paschal Mystery of Jesus. Out of those six main rites, there are 24 particular churches that are self-governing (<em>sui iuris<\/em>).\u00a0The Latin Rite is the largest of the churches, and all are under the leadership of the pope.\u00a0For your edification, here is list of the six rites all under the umbrella of the Catholic Church:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Latin Rite<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Latin Catholic Church<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alexandrian Rite<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Coptic Catholic Church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eritrean Catholic Church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ethiopian Catholic Church<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">West Syrian (or Antiochene) Rite<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Maronite Catholic Church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Syriac Catholic Church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Syro-Malankara Catholic Church<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Armenian Rite<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Armenian Catholic Church<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">East Syrian (or Chaldean) Rite<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chaldean Catholic Church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Syro-Malabar Catholic Church<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Constantinopolitan (or Byzantine) Rite<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Albanian Catholic Church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Belarusian Catholic Church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bulgarian Greek Catholic Church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Byzantine Church of Croatia, Serbia, and Montenegro (or Kri\u017eevci Catholic Church)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greek Byzantine Catholic Church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hungarian Greek Catholic Church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Italo-Albanian Catholic Church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Macedonian Catholic Church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Melkite Greek Catholic Church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Romanian Catholic Church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Russian Catholic Church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ruthenian Catholic Church (or Byzantine Catholic Church in America)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Slovak Catholic Church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unity in diversity glorifies God, who brings together people from all nations into one body in Christ!
